Iran ready for US talks with 'mutual respect'

TEHRAN: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran is prepared to talk to the United States in a climate of equality and mutual respect after three decades of severed ties.

"The Iranian nation will welcome true changes and is ready for dialogue in a climate of equality and mutual respect," he said in a speech to mark the 30th anniversary of the Islamic revolution.

"It is clear that the change must be fundamental and not tactical," he told a mass rally at Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square.

US President Barack Obama renewed his call for a direct dialogue with Iran, saying he hoped to create the conditions to "start sitting across the table, face to face" in the coming months.

Tens of thousands of Iranians chanting anti-American slogans took to the streets of the capital today for the annual demonstration at a time of continuing tense relations with Washington.

Demonstrators carried placards reading "30 years of freedom, 30 years of pride," "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," and many held red, white and green balloons in the colours of the Iranian flag.

The United States and other world powers suspect that Iran's controversial nuclear programme is aimed at making atomic weapons, but Tehran says it is civilian and peaceful.
